Punk Grimoire

Because the Dice Punks playcast focuses on lesser-known systems, we wanted to create a space for those systems- and their creators – to shine. Below are the creations that have inspired and delighted us, along with information on where to find these tomes should they delight you, too.

Nightfall: Campaign One

Nightfall uses a combination of Greg Stolze’s REIGN system (1st edition) and Jenna Katerin Moran’s NOBILIS system (2nd edition) and takes place in an original setting called Mieleth.

“Nobilis is a diceless RPG wherein each character has control over an elemental aspect of reality. They are drawn or forced into the struggle between Creation and the Not.”
REIGN expands the frontiers of fantasy gaming by elevating the action to an international stage. REIGN’s simple but complete rules model the triumphs and disasters of societies as small as a village or as large as a realm-spanning religion.”

Borrowed Light: Campaign Two

Our benevolent Patrons funded our purchase of Hard Wired Island for Campaign Two. Get your ‘noodz (aka ramen noodles) ready as the Dice Punks go Cyberpunk.

“Humanity has spread to space. GRAND CROSS is a space station orbiting Earth, a high-tech city, and a gateway to the stars. But in this distant future, it’s in crisis… Hard Wired Island is a retrofuture cyberpunk TTRPG, inspired by 90’s anime”

Mini-Campaigns

The Dice Punks are occasionally bad at keeping “one-shots” to just one episode. Our show began with a two-episode one-shot in a system actually called DICEPUNK, specifically Psionics. Since then, the ‘punks have branched out significantly, exploring a wide variety of genres, TTRPG crunch levels, and subject matter together.

“In Psionics, you play as Espers, troubled youths whose enormous psychic powers are about to violently awaken. As you grow into your power, push back, hard, against parents, teachers, peers, and the system that has pushed you around and held you down.”
Extreme Meatpunks Forever: The Roleplaying Game is a tabletop RPG about found family, queerness, and gigantic robots made of meat. Be gay. Pilot mechs. Kill Nazis.”

“Based on the award-winning and amazingly popular fiction podcast, the Old Gods of Appalachia Roleplaying Game is a complete, standalone TTRPG powered by the Cypher System. Old Gods of Appalachia’s unique take on cosmic horror is personal, intimate, and atmospheric. “
The DicePunk System is a fast-paced, ‘rules light’ RPG designed by and for people who grew up on, eat, sleep, breathe, and speak movies. The DicePunk System spins cinematic stories that take place more or less in the real world and more or less in the present day. “
“In this RPG of mature occult horror, the occult isn’t just fun and games. It’s all too real. Power players behind the scenes fight to ascend to a higher plane, where they’ll help create the next incarnation of reality….”

One-Shots

Sometimes, short is sweet. What started as a purchase of a one-shot bundle quickly turned into a way for the ‘punks to gather when real-world circumstances prevented a campaign quorum. These shorts provide an amuse-bouche between regularly scheduled programming.

“In Tricks, Treats, & Spooky Streets, players create and portray a group of kids, facing their fears together and helping each other solve supernatural problems through courage, cunning, and charm.”
Songs of Myself, by Erika Chappell, is a game about trying to reassemble a broken person, about doing your best with what you have, and about doing the dumbest $#!7 you’ve ever done.”
“Inspired by the way From Software games collapse their storytelling and history into item descriptions, Exiles is a melancholic game of wanderers sitting around a fire”.
Something is Wrong With This House is a short narrative horror game for 3–6 players about the haunting of a House from the perspective of its dark denizens.”

No, No, Nyarlathotep is a tabletop RPG about a musical that may or may not summon an entity from the Cthulhu mythos. It’s inspired by John Harper’s Lasers and Feelings, the extensive family of Cthulhu RPGs and fiction, and the golden age of American musicals.”
“Like most games, SALVATION is about going to a dark underground place and killing everything there for dubious reasons. This one is set apart by the fact you’re going to kill a lot more things, and at no point are we going to go through the charade of pretending this is about feelings or characterizations.”
